Can the hitch ball coupler be removed and the end inserted directly into a 2" receiver?

There would be no way for the trailer to pivot if the locking plate were installed and the coupler end was inserted directly into the receiver. You would bend something. Without the locking plate installed it would act as a straight hitch bar but it is not strong enough to use for road towing.
